    Description

    This auction is for an EXTREMELY RARE pamphlet entitled,
    "The Fortieth Annual Report of the Vermont Colonization Society presented at the Annual Meeting in Montpelier, on the Twentieth of October,1859."
    According to this report by 1858 11,172 black emingrants had been transported back to Africa.  Two thirds of these were former slaves.  In addition, the Society sent groups of missionaries to convert the natives stating that "the tone of morals is believed to be higher and the Sabbath better observed there than in Vermont.
    DESCRIPTION: Burlington: Danforth & Smalley Printers; 1860; 8vo.; 24 pages; good condition in paper wraps with previous owners' inscription to front cover; light scuffing to front wrap; text is clean; binding is tight.
