was first published in Paris by the famous Olympia Press.  It is a novel which defies classification, beyond our saying it is deliciously outrageous.  Although Mr. Himes himself has said "it is intended as a satire on middle-class Negroes and their white sponsors whou used the Negro problem to rid themselves of other social neuroses...it has been written with good will and is not intended to offend nor condemn any class of people.
